In 2005 videographer and photographer (and onetime Out photo editor) A.L. Steiner hit the road with performance art duo robbinschilds, made up of former girlfriend Layla Childs and Sonya Robbins. Over three weeks, Steiner shot spontaneously choreographed footage of robbinschilds in color-coordinated outfits moving, dancing, and “interpreting” the unusual spaces they ran into — from beaches and dunes to parking lots and desolate industrial spaces.

The playfully mesmerizing footage, combined with a soundtrack by indie band Kinski, formed the video project C.L.U.E. (color location ultimate experience), which Steiner explains as “mimicking the trope of the American road trip.” On view at New York’s New Museum until January 11, C.L.U.E., Part 1 (2007) will also be projected outside nightly onto an adjacent building, viewable from street level. But the project goes beyond video, with robbinschilds staging two live “interventions” in the small room where the work is installed as well as a longer performance that will take place throughout the museum.
